“Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.” -Anonymous
Why is the story of the Tortoise and the Hare so hard for us to understand apply to our lives? What do you think the tortoise really gave up to win the race?
The more I think about this story the more I learn from it. We know the tortoise never gave up, we all understand this part. What about the journey of the tortoise? I am guessing he saw things the hare completely missed. Many of us are moving slow because of situations we have put ourselves in. We think is stinks, but reality is, it might be where we need to be for God to teach us right now.
Also, if you think about the difference in effort the tortoise had to give and the speed at which he gave it, you could say the tortoise at least got to smell the roses along the way! The hare ran past all of the good stuff only to collapse and snooze. Do you ever feel like this is you? Running too fast and missing everything you really want to see and experience? The hare never thought about the “opportunity cost” of running so fast and sometimes neither do we!
This simple lesson can teach us about life, kids, our faith, our talents, our finances and so many more areas of our life.
The tortoise DID NOT give up anything except the effort to complete the task!
Proverbs 14:29 (NIV) says,”A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.” Folly, there is a kind description of us paying stupid-tax! And yes there is the P word…Patient! Lord, give us the patience we need to experience where we are right now.
Looking to get started, Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps are a great way to change your life forever!
» Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps By The Numbers: Getting Started.
Do you ever get sucked into something which provides short term gains but has long term concioquences just because you do not have the patience or will power to wait? Today we see this a lot in our lives where we NEEEED something and we do not have the money but we think we can always charge it!
My family is on a journey to live debt free and day by day as we make better long term decisions we REALLY see where these decisions are changing our lives for the future.
In Proverbs 28:20 (NLT) the Bible says, “The trustworthy person will get a rich reward, but a person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.” or in The Message translation, “Committed and persistent work pays off; get-rich-quick schemes are ripoffs.”. How many people have you seen win with get-rich-quick schemes? I am fairly creative, love technology and network with a lot of different people in my life, but I have NEVER seen anyone win in a get-rich-quick schemes. As a young man, I was always mindful and aware of the successful people and the traits they possess. It should not be a big surprise none of them thought they would be rich tomorrow because of one idea.
We all know Aesop’s classic fable, The Tortoise and the Hare. Why is this so hard for us? May for some people maybe the hope of ever winnning is gone. For others, the “snowball” or their debt is rolling too fast the wrong way and they can not seem to stop it. We have to remember it took years to get into our mess and it will take time to get out. We have to start with one step at a time just like the Tortoise! We have to ignore the Hare (the normal/broke people in our lives) and follow the plan OUR family has made. Read the book, the Tortoise ALWAYS WINS and so can YOU!
Dave Ramsey’s moto “Live like no one else, so later you can live like no one else” is really what it is all about. No one is saying it will be easy, BUT it will be worth it!
Ok, so where have we been? It has been a very fun and busy year so far!
I, Terry, have been working hard at Tire Company Solutions (TCS) on many new projects! It really has been crazy, our company has hired incredible people the last couple of years and we have designed and built some great products! Tire Power is my main project but it continues to expand and grow with so many people wanting to integrate with us this keeps all of us hopping.
ALSO, late last year Leslie and I joined up with some friends from The Grove to host Financial Peace University in January! Most of you know I am a Dave Ramsey freak! We payed off everything but the house in Jan of 2009, BUT went back into debt when we built our fence and with my neck and ankle surgeries! So, game on! We had 22 families sign up and wow what a crazy and fun group of families! These families killed it! They saved $54,ooo and paid off $48,000…$100,000 DIFFERENCE! We had so much fun! And Leslie and I agree, we are not going back there…in debt!
We just started another FPU class in June and we have 14 families in it, 3 host families. God is really moving in these classes and we are really trying to build this into a ministry at The Grove.
Leslie just completed another year at Cane Creek Elementary teaching kindergarten, this makes her 10th year there! We have a new school, Prescott South (Elementary/Middle) School, being built within a mile of our home. After prayer and consideration, Leslie applied for a transfer to the new K-8 school. We just found out she got the job! I am so proud of her! This was a big step and is very exciting for all of us. Our kids will be in the same school for the next 3 years, which helps a ton!
Chase finished up his first year at Prescott Middle School, and he loved it. He received his first nickname, 1% Human, from his math teach who he really liked! You will have to get Chase to explain what it means. He also had a great time playing spring soccer. Chase is really growing up and is a great helper to Leslie and I both! He just return home today from 4-H camp. He got to do many things he had never done. This is the first time he has been away for so long without family…but he loved it!
Alli Grace is…well Alli Grace! All girl all the time! She just finished kindergarten and did very well! I think she is really looking forward to just hanging out for the summer (she gets this from her mom..LOL).
Zoe (our Corgey…not) is great! Buster (the female cat) had a run in with another cat and she has hurt her leg, so we are having to watch her closely. And we add another pet to our family several weeks ago, Lizzy which is a shitzu. We just had her fixed, so she is also on the mend…
We are planning to ride the Creeper Trail in a couple of weeks, we are all looking forward to this! We are also planning a trip to Greenville, SC to visit with Leslie’s sister soon. And later this year Leslie and I are hoping to do our first 5K together! We just started the Couch 2 5K program!
